It has a two piece neck, it has the 1962/3 Hofner decal as well as the original strip tuners with the correct pegs, and it is has a two piece back making it Very rare in this combination. It also has the Long Long Curved Tailpiece. And looking at the official Hofner registration page online (details on request if needed), Individual Bass Details - General and download the excel file. There you will see full details of the specs of Mr McCartney's bass. It states Paul's is all of the above plus more.To date these precisely is an art and luckily this has a Van Wouw serial number of 5177 on the top of the head (not shown but please ask for more photos), and matching POT numbers of 312 (31st week of 62) that date this as mid to late 62, and it also has all electronics intact and un-interferred with. All original caps and wiring. There is also a date stamp inside of 13th April 1962 which is easily seen with a small mirror.
There was a 50/50 chance of a date stamp in this place on these early ones and again very lucky to have this also. We don't know if Paul's has a date stamped on his but we do know his updated Control panel and Pickups are from mid 63 as his POT numbers are 283! This has the exact Paul McCartney spec neck and body with the additional added bonus of no holes drilled for the strap. This is actually very rare as the early basses never came with a strap button on the heel which was a pain if you wanted to stand up so people mostly installed one themselves usually on the heel or to the side.
I read McCartney himself only put this heel strap button on in the 90's as was beginning to tour again so much with it. There is an original strap button by the tail piece. The Tailpiece is a very long type which is exactly the same as Mr Mc and even though most 1963/4/5 tail pieces are classed as long.. This bass is working perfectly and has now been set up with new La Bella flat wound strings sitting low and without any buzzing on any fret, plus there is still plenty of room to lower the strings even more. The colour of the original varnish or veneer has faded on the back edges though time but is all still extremely smooth and adds to it's authenticity and charm and has the little logo on the body which pretty much all 1961-2 models had. Did you know that Paul's'61 had this and was hidden under the pickguard...
Pick ups are the type 510B diamonds, which are completely original and balanced and which were only available in 1962. Pickguard is the original which is very rare as these usually went missing.Pickguard bracket and screw are original 60's also. Similar basses without true McCartney specs are going for a lot more, so if you were sitting on the fence looking for the right one, this is it. It doesn't come any closer than this. Lovely to hold, even nicer to play. Comes with a professional Hofner mock Selmer hard case.
